NATURE-ETN comes to a close

The NATURE-ETN project, launched in April 2020, has officially ended. Spanning 10 beneficiary host organisations, the project recruited 15 Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) who tackled significant scientific challenges. These efforts have led to advancements in gene-editing technologies, therapeutic oligonucleotide design, prebiotic chemistry, and epigenetic sequencing tools.

Key achievements of the NATURE-ETN initiative include the development of innovative methods for artificial gene editing using triplex-forming oligonucleotide hybrids and the synthesis of novel therapeutics targeting cancer immunotherapy and viral infections. The project has also made strides in epigenetic research, creating reagents for high-sensitivity base detection and enhancing next-generation sequencing technologies.

The project’s outcomes have been disseminated widely, with peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals such as Nature, Angewandte Chemie, and Nucleic Acids Research. Researchers have also showcased their work at scientific conferences across Europe and in online forums, fostering collaborations and community engagement.

Training and career development were central to NATURE-ETN’s mission. ESRs participated in comprehensive training weeks that included workshops on scientific writing, publishing, and industry-focused skills.

Through its outputs and collaborative efforts, NATURE-ETN has contributed valuable knowledge and tools to its field.

We wish all the 15 ESRs all the best for their next stages of their career.

A delegation of NATURE-ETN ESRs at the SCNAC 2022 in Czechia

On the week of the 6th of June 2022, ten of our Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) attended the XVIIIth Symposium on Chemistry of Nucleic Acid Components in Český Krumlov, Czechia.

This conference was organised by Prof. Michal Hocek, NATURE-ETN supervisor at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB), and his team, including our ESRs Tania Sánchez Quirante and Mario Dominguez Garcia.

ESRs Chun-Yin Chan, Elsa Peev, Eva Schönegger, and Malou Coche as well as our co-supervisor Dr. Georgia Menounou from the Dublin City University had the opportunity to present their research during the conference’s poster sessions.

NATURE-ETN Principal Investigators Prof. Tom Brown and Dr. Afaf El Sagheer from the University of Oxford, and Prof. Thomas Carell from the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich were among the invited speakers.

What made this event special is also the immersion into the historic town of Český Krumlov, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This immersion notably went through traditional costumes, as shown in some of the pictures.

We thank Prof. Hocek and his team for organising such a successful event and all speakers and participants for the great talks and conversations. We already look forward to the next edition!

1st Project meeting with the newly recruited ESRs

On 16 December 2020, the NATURE-ETN team had a first network meeting with the 12 recruited ESRs.

This was the occasion for the consortium to virtually meet each other before the Holiday season and for the ESRs to introduce themselves and their research projects. After this round of introductions, the PIs and ESRs were divided into separate rooms to discuss next year’s activities for the former and simply to get to know each other for the latter.

First ESRs recruited

Seven out of the 15 ESRs have started their position in Germany, United Kingdom, France and Czech Republic.

The NATURE- ETN intersectorial training programme will provide them  with unique multidisciplinary scientific training  in the fields of chemical synthesis, biochemistry and cell biology as well as transferable and business skills, thanks notably to the contribution of the industry partners.

You can read about their project and background in the “People” section.

NATURE-ETN held its online kick-off meeting

The NATURE-ETN kick-off meeting was held online on the 10th July 2020.

During the meeting, the consortium members discussed the workplan, the recruitment process and administrative-related matters such as: partners’ obligations, financial aspects and basic rules of ITNs.

NATURE-ETN starts

NATURE-ETN has officially started!

The European Training Network (ETN) funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions will train 15 early stage researchers (ESRs) in the intersection of nucleic acid immunotherapy, gene editing, DNA crystallography and epigenetic DNA sequencing  technology.
